Amardeep Bassey is a freelance journalist and senior lecturer in investigative journalism at De Montfort University. He has worked as a specialised journalist for over 30 years with a focus on community issues in and around Birmingham and the West Midlands. He first got involved in journalism through his love for writing and the English language. He wanted to do something with his love and decided to go into journalism.
By his second year at university where he studyed English. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. Once he completed his degree, he went on to complete the national standard NCTJ course for journalist at Sheffield College. This then led to him signing up to a press agency which, gave him a chance to report on more of the bigger news stories. Amardeep found success in this and found a love in the fast pace of tight deadlines and the rush to get the exciting stories out first.
After years of working for press agencies he was given a role at the Birmingham Mail where he successfully worked for the next 10 years. This gave him responsibility as a writer as his name was now printed on every story. He began writing stories with more of a human interest and then went on to head up a Birmingham office for the Huffington Post. Amardeep always wanted to go on to teach and had a love for the idea of passing on his skills and years of experience in journalism. When the opportunity came to deliver a few lectors as a guest lecturer at De Montfort University he jumped at the chance. This turned into a permanent position as a lecture which, Amardeep currently holds as well as working as a freelance journalist.
